I'm starting my convention blogging a little late, but don't say I'm not trying to make up for last time. There are a lot of people here who want to meet me, and I musn't disappoint my fans. So I'll start with Thursday's
events.
For those of you who are my Facebook friends, you may recall I was very curious who I would run into from the party on my flight, as surely there would be at least one person whom I know leaving from Toronto en route with me to the Liberal Convention in BC.
I had some very important cargo on my flight that was too important to see anything bad happen with. I knew when I saw this individual, I was going to be arriving safely - Mr. Jean Chretien. I was surprised to see him, and admittedly, awe struck. Quite honestly, I don't get awe-struck at all very
easily - I tend to stress the "P" person - in the term VIP - they are no different than me, and until they ask for my autograph, I really don't see any difference between us. What I appreciate more is a handshake and a nice conversation. But I will admit that Mr. Chretien made me tremble. A great parliamentarian, a PM with a more than decent record who implemented some of our greatest policies and legacies, and who, to this day, is well liked by the majority of
Canadians. I introduced myself to him and informed him I was currently reading his Prime Ministerial memoirs. I also said I would be waiting for Part 2 of his book, in response to Mr. Martin's memoirs, but he
said that wont be happening (darn, gotta love the drama).
He also had his wife Aline with him. When I saw her, I wondered what it's like for her to accompany him on these such trips. I'm sure she does enjoy them to see different parts of the country and world, but unfortunately no one really seemed interested in meeting her. Sure, she has had a life time to get used to it, but she must be a very interesting woman that is underestimated. Surely she has had influence in the decisions he has made, maybe more so than anyone else, and she has been through everything with him, much longer than just a staffer who stayed ten years or so with him and left. She certainly has a lot to offer.
People always looking over such individuals reminds me of people who wait in line with their eyes focused on the VIP they want to meet - you always ask the assistant for such an opportunity, because they know how to make it happen.
I also had Bill Graham and his wife on our flight, Carol Golench (OLP VP Policy), Madeline Sheere (Candidate, LPC Policy), and I also
believe Belinda Stronach as I saw her at our gate waiting for the luggage from our flight.
And last but not least, my own former MP from Brant, Lloyd St. Amand was also on my flight. Fair warning to current Conservative MP for Brant Phil McColeman: St. Amand is getting fired up about the next election, and the old St. Amand you had the pleasure of opposing in
the last election won't be the same one in the next election. Lloyd had never lost an election before, and as I'm sure Phil can very well attest to (having lost twice), you learn things even by losing. I came upon this website a few weeks ago: http://dumpphil.blogspot.com/ , made just for Phil the MP, and I have to say, Lloyd never had a website or stalkers in his honour, especially one in
the spirit that this blog is. So I don't know if Phil appreciates the attention, but as he is someone who gives out coupons to meet with, I
can understand a bit of the motivation. The blog posts are kinda funny - and I don't know who to blame for that - the author(s) or Phil himself?
